Islam Republic Neoliberalism

A triptych of network maps visualizing the spatial influence of three dominant ideologies in Istanbul: Islam, the Republic, and Neoliberalism.

Islam, Republic, Neoliberalism consists of three network maps that trace how mosques, republican monuments, and shopping malls are distributed across Istanbul and connected through their spatial reach. Each map highlights the relational patterns formed by these architectural structures—each representing a distinct ideological force in modern Turkey.

  • Network of Mosques: Generated by mapping the overlapping call-to-prayer reach (~300-meter radius) of over 3,000 mosques across Istanbul.

  • Network of Republican Monuments: Formed through physical proximity among republican monuments and museums.

  • Network of Shopping Malls: Based on the overlapping areas of spatial influence of Istanbul’s major shopping malls.

Together, these maps offer a comparative visual study of how Islam, Republicanism, and Neoliberalism manifest spatially and symbolically in the city—often intersecting, competing, or dominating in different urban zones.
